WhatsApp Is Testing Monthly Message Limit To Tackle Spam And Unwanted Texts

WhatsApp is set to introduce a new anti-spam feature that could change how frequently users and businesses send messages. According to a report by TechCrunch, the Meta-owned messaging platform will begin testing a monthly cap on messages that go unanswered by recipients.

The new feature limits the number of messages users can send without receiving a reply. Although WhatsApp is still experimenting with various thresholds, the goal is to identify a limit that primarily affects high-volume senders and potential spammers rather than ordinary users.

All messages—whether from individuals or businesses—will count toward this limit, including multiple unread texts sent to the same contact. However, if the recipient responds, those messages will no longer be included in the tally. WhatsApp will also alert accounts that approach their monthly cap.

The messaging service has assured TechCrunch that most regular users won’t hit the limit, as the feature is designed to target spam and unwanted communication.

The company highlighted that constant messaging without a response is already considered poor etiquette, suggesting the change will mainly impact businesses and marketers who send bulk messages.

The trial will be rolled out in several countries in the coming weeks as part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to create a safer and more user-friendly messaging environment.

This trial is the latest step in the messaging service’s broader mission to combat spam and scams across its platform.

In 2024, the app introduced a feature allowing users to unsubscribe from business marketing messages. More recently, it began notifying users when someone not in their contacts adds them to a group chat.

In August, WhatsApp revealed that it had banned more than 6.8 million accounts linked to scam activities during the first half of 2025. These measures demonstrate Meta’s continued commitment to keeping WhatsApp safe from misuse and maintaining trust among its global user base.
