Eshowe Triple Murder: Nzuzo Mthombeni Still On The Run
Police say there are no new developments in the killing of three women at a Boxer store, while social media users debate the case and call for accountability.

More than a week after three women were shot dead at a Boxer grocery store in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal, police say there are no new developments in the investigation. Nzuzo Mthombeni, identified by police as a person of interest, remains sought in connection with the killings.
Meanwhile, social media reactions have sparked debate over the case, workplace treatment and whether public sympathy is influencing how people view the alleged perpetrator.
Eshowe Triple Murder Investigation Stalls As Police Seek Nzuzo Mthombeni
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Paul Magwaza said on Monday that investigators had no new information to share about the Eshowe triple murder.
KwaZulu-Natal police previously appealed for public assistance in locating Mthombeni, who is believed to be able to assist with the investigation into the deaths of three women at the Boxer store on Saturday, 10 October.
In a statement issued on 16 October, provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda urged anyone with information about Mthombeni’s whereabouts to contact police.

“Mthombeni is the person of interest and can help police in the investigation into the killing of three women at a grocery store in Eshowe on Saturday, October 10,” Netshiunda said.

CCTV footage showing the shooting has since circulated widely on social media, prompting discussion about the circumstances surrounding the killings. Comments on the South African Police Service’s Facebook post requesting assistance have included questions about police efforts to locate Mthombeni, as well as messages expressing support for him.
Other users have condemned attempts to justify the killings or use the incident to make broader arguments about workplace disputes.
Eshowe Triple Murder Sparks Debate Over Workplace Treatment
The Eshowe triple murder has prompted some social media users to draw connections between the incident and allegations of mistreatment in workplaces, while others have challenged the apparent justification of violence.
Luyanda Cele criticised what she described as inconsistent reactions to killings, arguing that workplace grievances should not be used to excuse murder. She said some people condemned violence in domestic disputes but appeared more accepting of killings in a workplace setting.
“People choose which ‘wrong’ is better than the other. When men kill their partners for using them for their money as they claim, women out here will say it’s wrong but it’s okay to kill at a workplace, and some women are also happy about it in the comment sections,” Cele wrote.

Lawry Chinovava questioned whether public reactions would differ if the person involved were a foreign national, arguing that alleged workplace abuse should be condemned regardless of nationality. He also warned against making assumptions about Mthombeni’s circumstances or suggesting that any alleged mistreatment could justify the killings.
“Let’s not allow our emotions, prejudices or assumptions to determine the facts. If we genuinely care about workplace abuse, then we should condemn it regardless of whether the person being mistreated is a foreign national or a local. Justice must be applied equally to everyone,” Chinovava wrote.
Chinovava further stressed that there was no conclusive evidence establishing that Mthombeni had been mistreated at work or that any such circumstances could explain his alleged actions. His comments highlighted the distinction between discussing workplace conditions and determining responsibility for the deaths. Police have not announced a motive for the killings.
Eshowe Triple Murder: Social Media Users Call For Justice
The Eshowe triple murder has also drawn criticism from people who believe the victims’ deaths are being overshadowed by online discussions about management practices and workplace disputes. Ntombifuthi Hleza condemned comments that appeared to justify the killings, saying the incident should not be used to lecture managers or women about leadership. She argued that such reactions were disturbing given the loss of three lives.
“It’s sickening to see from comments from other posters that he is justified. Some men have resorted to using this incident as a lesson for managers and women on how to be good leaders at work,” Hleza wrote.
Sinoxolo Duma Mthombeni also questioned the public response to the killings and what she perceived as limited mobilisation to help police locate the person of interest. She described the attack as particularly distressing because it happened in broad daylight and involved three women at their workplace. Her comments reflected frustration over what she viewed as a lack of urgency in assisting investigators.
“Three women were brutally murdered at the Eshowe Boxer by a former/suspended employee. In broad daylight. He didn’t even grant them a second chance to life. He walked over to two of the women who were still moving to finish the job,” she wrote.
Police have urged anyone with information about Nzuzo Mthombeni’s whereabouts to come forward as the investigation continues. Authorities have not announced any new developments, and the motive for the killings has not been established publicly. The online debate continues as police seek information that could assist the investigation.
