South African superfan Joy “Mama Joy” Chauke has made waves with her assertion that her absence at Kings Park Stadium in Durban led to the Springboks’ narrow 25-24 loss to Ireland in the second test.

Known for her unwavering support of national sports teams, Mama Joy believes she is the Springboks’ lucky charm.

Mama Joy’s confidence in her influence is nothing short of inspiring. “You heard a prophetic message from me yesterday, meaning ‘[if] I don’t go to Durban, the Springboks will lose the game,’” she stated.

Earlier this month, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie cancelled sponsorships for fans’ trips to support national teams, a move that Mama Joy doesn’t fully agree with.

The minister justified the decision, stating that spending R1.3m on accommodation and travel costs for superfans was “unjustifiable.” Nonetheless, Mama Joy expressed her love for the minister on Twitter, despite their differing views.

Interestingly, Mama Joy was offered a chance to attend the game by an event supporters’ group, Braai Army.

They were ready to assist with transport, ticket, and accommodation costs, but she declined and watched the game on TV instead. In a subsequent tweet, she thanked the group, wishing them blessings from the good Lord and her ancestors.

Mama Joy’s claims have sparked a mixed reaction on social media, with some fans supporting her and others thinking she might be exaggerating.
