Former Tshwane Mayor, Murunwa Makwarela, has sadly passed away following a short illness. The news was shared in a WhatsApp message that was seen by Surgezirc SA and forwarded to politicians in the city.
The message requested prayers and strength for Makwarela’s wife and family during this difficult time.
Current Mayor, Cillier Brink, expressed his sadness at the news and paid tribute to Makwarela. Despite any differences or controversies during his tenure, Mayor Brink hopes that God will comfort Makwarela’s family and bring them peace.
Speaker Mncedi Ndzwanana also shared his condolences, calling it a sad day for the city and the office of the speaker. Makwarela was Ndzwanana’s predecessor, and Ndzwanana continues where he left off. He extends his sympathies to Makwarela’s family and the residents of Tshwane.
Makwarela’s time as mayor was short-lived. He was appointed in February 2023, replacing Randall Williams. However, it was later revealed that Makwarela had been declared insolvent in 2016, making him ineligible for public office.
He submitted a certificate claiming successful rehabilitation, but the court that supposedly issued the document disputed its authenticity. As a result, a case of fraud was opened against him by the city.
Makwarela recently appeared in the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court, where he failed to have the matter struck from the court roll. Prosecutors requested a postponement to set the case down for trial.
