In the early hours of Saturday, a 53-year-old teacher from Greenpoint High School in East London was fatally shot in his home on Tritonia Street, Bryaelyn.
The incident, which occurred just after midnight, was witnessed by another individual present in the house. According to Eastern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu, the witness heard a vehicle stop outside and observed a suspect’s arm pulling the lounge window curtain.
In an attempt to defend themselves, the witness struck the suspect with a spade and shouted for help. This disturbance awakened the teacher, who went to investigate the source of the commotion.
Tragically, the suspect shot the teacher in the upper body before fleeing the scene. The teacher succumbed to his injuries immediately.
The South African Police Service’s Cambridge detectives have since classified the case as murder and are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
The community has been left in shock by the sudden and violent loss of a respected educator. The Eastern Cape Department of Education MEC, Fundile Gade, conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the teacher’s family and emphasized the profound loss experienced by both the community and the school.
He highlighted the teacher’s significant contributions to Greenpoint High School and the educational sector at large.
