Altcoin Market Crashes As $380 Billion Wiped Out — Trump Memecoin And Others Plummet

The altcoin casino imploded spectacularly last week, and it’s unclear if the gamblers will return anytime soon. The market crash didn’t just dent Bitcoin — it obliterated entire ecosystems of speculative tokens that had once promised massive wealth through viral memes, celebrity associations, and unchecked hype.

Bitcoin dropped by 13% following renewed US-China tariff tensions. However, the real carnage occurred among smaller tokens, with many plummeting as much as 80% before a slight rebound.

Trump’s memecoin — a cryptocurrency promoted earlier this year by US President Donald Trump — tumbled 37% on Friday, according to CoinMarketCap. Another Trump-linked digital asset, World Liberty Financial Inc.’s WLFI token, suffered a similar drop.

According to 10x Research, approximately $380 billion (R6.6 trillion) in value was erased during the crash, with $131 billion coming from altcoins — a sector heavily dependent on speculative trading and limited liquidity.

Memecoins Hit Hard as Market Sentiment Crumbles

The selloff has sparked doubts about the future of the altcoin ecosystem, as traders and market makers see structural weaknesses deepening. With fewer buyers and growing risk aversion, many tokens are struggling to find stability.

The speed and scale of the downturn were unprecedented. As researchers at Arca noted, “if you’re a fully on-chain crypto degenerate trader, however, you witnessed armageddon.”

Altcoins — digital assets excluding Bitcoin and Ether — range from tokens inspired by internet memes to those pegged to real-world figures or animals. Among the hardest hit were meme-based tokens like Shiba Inu, Pepe, and Moo Deng.

These coins, often thinly traded and lacking real buyer depth, rely heavily on a small circle of market players to stabilise prices. When those players retreat during selloffs, prices tend to collapse rapidly.

Despite their fragility, such coins had grown to command a significant portion of the crypto market. Bitcoin’s dominance slipped from nearly 65% in July to 58.5%, according to CoinMarketCap — a trend that has historically preceded major market corrections.

Traders Brace for a Long Freeze in Altcoin Markets

Many investors now expect a prolonged downturn for niche digital assets, particularly after seeing their portfolios decimated. Few altcoins had been performing well even before last week’s collapse.

“The problem with alt coins is, yes, they can go up more,” said Morten Christensen, a trader who runs AirdropAlert.com. “But they can go -50% in a day or -90% in a week. I am not going to play that game with my portfolio late in the cycle when the odds keep increasing that the end is here.”

Trump’s memecoin has dropped nearly 78% since its January debut, most of that loss occurring before the recent crash. Meanwhile, XRP — the fifth-largest cryptocurrency — is trading close to its January price. Binance-linked BNB stands out as a rare winner, up 81% for the year.

“These assets in particular have been subject to a considerable amount of risk, as we saw this weekend, yet have been broadly underperforming large-cap crypto assets, equities and gold,” said Needham & Co. analyst John Todaro. “In short, taking on significantly more risk for what has been less reward.”

Wintermute CEO Evgeny Gaevoy summed up the market mood bluntly: “the alt coin market will shrink.”
