The African National Congress (ANC) has announced that it has yet to convene a meeting to discuss the suspension of former president Jacob Zuma from the party.
Earlier this year, Zuma was suspended after refusing to endorse the governing party in the May polls and subsequently launching a rival political party. This move further strained Zuma’s already fractured relationship with the ANC, as he was already facing corruption allegations.
Despite mounting pressure to take stronger action against Zuma for bringing the party into disrepute, the ANC has not yet implemented harsher sanctions. With only 36 days remaining until the crucial elections, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula stated that Zuma’s matter was not currently a top priority for the party.

Mbalula explained that the party was still deliberating on whether to call a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting specifically to address Zuma’s case or leave it to the disciplinary committee.
He emphasised that the ANC would make a decision on how to proceed during its meetings. However, Mbalula made it clear that Zuma’s actions had effectively severed his ties with the ANC.
“Mr Zuma can no longer be considered a member of the ANC, as he has already been temporarily suspended. He has now completely distanced himself and positioned himself as the leader of an opposing faction,” Mbalula stated.
As the ANC continues to grapple with internal divisions and the upcoming elections, the party’s handling of Zuma’s suspension will undoubtedly have significant implications for its future.
