Life On The Election Campaign Trail Taking Toll On Jacob Zuma

News24 reported this week that Zuma had to suspend his election campaign activities after collapsing due to fatigue and low blood pressure

Former corruption-accused President Jacob Zuma, who turned 82 on April 12, seems to be feeling the strain of life on the election campaign trail. Over the past few months, Zuma has been juggling court appearances with his campaign activities.

Recently, he replaced Jabulani Khumalo as the leader of the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party, which means his face will now appear on the national ballot paper for MK.

News24 reported this week that Zuma had to suspend his election campaign activities after collapsing due to fatigue and low blood pressure.

Although he has since recovered, concerns about his health have been raised by doctors and his security team. There have been reports of multiple incidents pointing to his frail state of health.

However, the MK party spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, has denied claims that Zuma is unwell. According to Ndhlela, there are no concerns about Zuma’s health, and it is common for him to rest for a couple of days before embarking on a campaign blitz. He also stated that Zuma always travels with a doctor and that an ambulance with a doctor is part of his motorcade.

It is worth mentioning that Zuma has a track record of using stalingrad tactics and citing ill health to delay court proceedings and avoid facing criminal prosecutions. He has previously sought medical treatment in Russia and has expressed mistrust in how his health has been addressed in court and at the Zondo Commission.

Despite these health concerns, the MK party is continuing its campaign, with an upcoming event scheduled at Zuma’s homestead. It remains to be seen how Zuma’s health will impact his involvement in the election campaign and his ability to fulfil his role as the leader of the MK party.
