Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has called for urgent legislative changes to the South African Police Service Act.
Speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria, Mchunu highlighted that the current legislation is outdated and impeding the government’s efforts to combat crime effectively.
Mchunu stressed that the South African Police Service Act still contains references to the 1993 interim constitution, which is no longer relevant in today’s context.

He emphasized that the act needs to be updated to align with modern crime-fighting and prevention demands. The proposed amendments aim to give the police more authority and better tools to address the current crime landscape.
The minister assured that the amendments to the South African Police Service Act will be a priority for the seventh administration. He indicated that these changes are necessary to empower the police force, which is crucial for maintaining law and order.
Mchunu also mentioned that the national policy on policing would be finalized, taking into account the varying needs and priorities of different provinces.
