Twelve Pupils Die After Scholar Transport Overturns, Bursts Into Flames

On Wednesday, a tragic road accident resulted in the loss of a minibus driver and 12 pupils from two schools in Gauteng.

According to the Gauteng Education Department, 11 of the deceased pupils were from Rocklands Primary School, and one was from Laerskool Blyvooruitsig in Carletonville. The accident occurred at 6:45 am in the Kokosi-Wedela area of Merafong.

Department spokesperson Steve Mabona stated that the learner transport minibus was struck from behind by a bakkie, causing it to overturn and catch fire. This horrific incident not only claimed 13 lives but also left seven pupils injured. The immediate aftermath has left the community in shock and grief.

The Gauteng Education Department has taken swift action by dispatching its psychosocial support team to the affected schools to provide necessary support to the students, staff, and families. Counseling services will be made available to help everyone cope with the emotional trauma caused by this incident.

Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed his profound sorrow, stating, “The loss of our children is a devastating blow to our community, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and injured learners.” He added, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and both schools’ communities during this difficult time. We also wish the injured learners a speedy recovery.”

The MEC is expected to visit the scene of the accident and both affected schools to offer his support and condolences personally.
