Truck Blockade Brings N3 Toll Route to Standstill, Motorists Urged To Delay Travel

Motorists using the busy N3 Toll Route were urged to delay their journeys on Monday after trucks blocked key sections of the national road near the Roadside/Reitz Interchange in the Free State. The reason behind the truck drivers’ protest remains unclear at this stage.

According to N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) chief operating officer Thania Dhoogra, reports indicate trucks are obstructing the route in both directions, causing major delays.

“Road users are advised to approach the area with caution. If possible, please delay your trips to the area until further information has been received from law enforcement,” said Dhoogra.

Recurring Protests Disrupt Critical National Trade Route

This is not the first time that protest action has disrupted the N3, which serves as a vital corridor between Johannesburg and Durban. In October, six trucks were set alight during similar protest action, causing extensive damage and travel delays. In May, the N3TC issued a similar warning during a community protest at Van Reenen’s Pass where tyres were burned and traffic came to a standstill.

Videos circulating on social media on Monday showed stationary vehicles while tyres were set alight on either side of the road.

Why the N3 Matters: Trade, Travel, and Tourism Lifeline

The N3 Toll Route spans 415 km, connecting Cedara in KwaZulu-Natal to Heidelberg in Gauteng. Managed by the N3TC, this route is far more than just a link for holidaymakers—it’s an essential trade artery.

With 44% of its daily traffic made up of trucks, the N3 plays a critical role in connecting South Africa’s economic heartland to its busiest port in Durban. This traffic pattern holds steady even on weekends and during holiday periods, underscoring the road’s economic importance.

As law enforcement responds to the disruption, motorists are strongly advised to check traffic updates, reroute if possible, and remain patient as efforts continue to restore order.
