Aletta Rose Murder Case Delayed As Sister’s Accused Killer Awaits Psychiatric Assessment
The 63-year-old woman remains fifth on the waiting list for a forensic psychiatric evaluation at Valkenberg Hospital, delaying proceedings in her sister’s murder case.

The murder case against 63-year-old Aletta Rose is expected back in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Friday, with an update anticipated on her long-delayed psychiatric evaluation. Rose is accused of killing her 80-year-old sister and dismembering her hands in March. Her case has been repeatedly postponed because she is still waiting for a district surgeon assessment.
Aletta Rose Murder Case Delayed By Psychiatric Assessment Backlog
The Aletta Rose murder case has faced repeated delays as she remains fifth on the waiting list for a forensic psychiatric assessment, a position she has reportedly held since August. She was referred to Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital in June for observation under a district surgeon. The court is expected to receive an update on Friday about the status of the assessment.

Rose’s previous court appearance also ended in a postponement because the evaluation had not taken place. The delays have raised questions about the availability of forensic psychiatric assessments for accused people awaiting trial. Her current position on the waiting list remains unchanged, according to the information provided to the court.
Valkenberg Hospital Faces Shortage Of Forensic Psychiatric Beds
The Aletta Rose psychiatric assessment must take place at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital, which the Western Cape Health and Wellness Department says is the only facility in the province legally authorised to conduct court-ordered forensic psychiatric observations and evaluations.
Although the hospital has 391 beds, just 17 are approved for forensic psychiatric observations. Only two of those beds are allocated to female accused.

The limited capacity has contributed to a backlog of people awaiting assessments. The department said 416 accused people were waiting for forensic psychiatric evaluations, although it had not yet established whether Rose was included in that total.
The department has not provided a timeframe for when her assessment might take place.
The Aletta Rose court case is due to return to the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Friday for an update on the psychiatric assessment process. The evaluation is expected to inform how the proceedings continue. Until it takes place, the case remains subject to further delays.
