Train And Car Collide At Philippi Level Crossing

Commuters on Cape Town’s Central Line had a frightening start to their Wednesday morning after a white Toyota Avanza collided with a train at the Philippi station level crossing. The dramatic incident occurred at exactly 7:49am between Philippi and Nyanga, temporarily halting services on one of the region’s busiest rail routes.

According to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), the No. 9904 train was pulling into the station when the driver spotted the vehicle approaching the level crossing. Despite immediately sounding the warning horn, the Avanza continued onto the tracks, leading to the collision.

Fortunately, both the driver and all train commuters escaped without injury.

PRASA Blames Misjudged Speed and Ignores Warnings

In a statement released shortly after the incident, PRASA Metrorail Western Cape urged motorists to respect safety protocols at level crossings, stressing that train speed is often misjudged.

“Reports from the Train Crew are that the train driver observed a vehicle approaching the level crossing and sounded the warning horn,” the statement read. “Despite the warning horn from the driver, the vehicle was reported to have proceeded onto the crossing, which then led to the incident.”

PRASA confirmed that services on the Central Line were disrupted as a result of the crash, with trains forced to turn back at Nyanga station.

“Trains by nature appear to be moving slowly at a distance, resulting in motorists miscalculating their speed. However, they are fast-moving and aren’t able to make sudden stops,” PRASA warned.

“We urge all road users and pedestrians to continue exercising extreme caution when approaching level crossings and to adhere to warning signals.”

Police Assess Scene as Social Media Footage Emerges

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that officers were deployed to the scene to evaluate the situation. “Preliminary reports suggest that there were no injuries reported,” Twigg said.

Footage of the aftermath quickly surfaced on social media, showing the Avanza’s front end badly damaged as stunned commuters gathered nearby. The incident has reignited concerns over rail safety and driver attentiveness at level crossings.

Authorities have launched an internal investigation into the collision. For now, officials are urging all road users to remain alert, especially when crossing active railway tracks.
