SA Braces For Cold Front: Snow, Rain, And Weather Warnings Sweep Across The Country

South Africa is in the grip of a powerful cold front as icy conditions and widespread rain settle over most of the country. According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), temperatures on Monday are expected to plummet, with high-lying areas at risk of light snowfall.

Tokelo Chiloane, senior forecaster at SAWS, said parts of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo would face chilly daytime temperatures ranging between 10°C and 17°C.

“The temperatures are going to be in the cold category from Monday onwards and we are going to start seeing this recovery from Thursday,” said Chiloane. “But because we are in the winter season, we don’t anticipate that they will recover to the warm conditions — they will remain in the cool conditions.”

The coldest spot is expected to be Ermelo in Mpumalanga, where temperatures may drop to between 0°C and 4°C from Monday through Wednesday. In addition to the biting cold, some parts of the interior — including Gauteng — woke up to unusual winter rain on Monday morning.

Emergency Services on High Alert Amid Risky Heating Practices

With the plummeting temperatures, emergency services across South Africa are on standby. The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department (ESD) has issued a public safety warning, urging residents to use heating devices responsibly.

Lindsay Mnguni, spokesperson for the ESD, cautioned that heaters, braziers, open flames, and other heating methods could cause fires, injuries, or property damage if misused.

“As the temperatures drop, many residents rely on heating methods such as gas heaters, braziers, electric and paraffin heaters, and open flames to stay warm,” said Mnguni. “While these methods can provide much-needed warmth, improper use can lead to devastating fires, property damage, and serious injuries.”

Severe Weather Warnings Across Provinces: Snow, Flooding, and Storms Expected

The SAWS has issued a series of yellow and orange level warnings for snow, rain, flooding, and damaging waves, with several areas on high alert:

• Yellow Level 6 Snow Warning: Heavy snow could cut off communities and close passes in the Joe Gqabi, Enoch Mgijima (Molteno), and Matatiele areas of the Eastern Cape.
• Orange Level 6 Rain Warning: Flooding is likely in Amathole, OR Tambo, and Buffalo City Metro municipalities.
• Orange Level 5 Rain Warning: Dangerous flooding and potential mudslides are expected in Alfred Nzo, Nelson Mandela Bay, Makana, Kouga, and surrounding local municipalities.
• Yellow Level 2 Snow and Rain Warnings: Snow-related traffic disruptions and livestock losses may affect Chris Hani, Dr Beyers Naude, Raymond Mhlaba, Amahlati, and Umzimvubu areas.
• Yellow Level 2 Sea Warning: Damaging waves from Saldanha Bay to Plettenberg Bay could affect marine navigation.
• Yellow Level 2 Thunderstorm Warning: Parts of KwaZulu-Natal may experience severe thunderstorms, including heavy downpours, hail, and damaging winds.

Residents are urged to monitor updates from SAWS and take precautions as South Africa faces one of its most intense cold spells of the season.
