South African LED Streetlights Worth R1.8 Million Recovered In Mozambique-bound Vehicle

In a significant breakthrough, South African authorities intercepted a vehicle at the Kosi Bay Port of Entry on 11 November, which was found to be carrying 52 vandalized and stolen LED streetlights.

The estimated value of the streetlights is around R1.8 million. The Richards Bay Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, in collaboration with the Kosi Bay Border Management Authority (BMA), conducted a stop-and-search operation at the border, leading to the discovery.

The vehicle, driven by a 44-year-old man with a 31-year-old accomplice as a passenger, was flagged down during the operation.

Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, the police spokesperson, informed the media that upon realizing that the streetlights belonged to the eThekwini Municipality, the two suspects were immediately apprehended.

The suspects failed to provide a reasonable explanation regarding the origin of the municipality property.

An official from the eThekwini Municipality was called to the scene, where he positively identified and confirmed that the recovered streetlights were indeed the property of the municipality.

As a result, the two individuals were charged with possession of property suspected to be stolen, as well as tampering with essential infrastructure.

The arrested suspects were scheduled to appear in the Manguzi Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where further legal proceedings would take place.

This incident highlights the ongoing issue of theft and vandalism of public property, specifically streetlights, which adversely affects the functioning and safety of communities.
