In a recent operation, the police have successfully taken down a notorious figure in the world of illicit mining. The man, who has been identified as a kingpin in the illegal mining industry, was allegedly connected to a staggering 29 murders.
The confrontation took place at his hideout in Soweto, where he was tracked down by the National Intervention Unit.
The suspect, a national of Lesotho, was wanted for his involvement in various murders, particularly those related to the zama-zamas at the Nomzamo Tavern mass shooting and in Florida.
The incident at Mdlalose’s Tavern in the Nomzamo informal settlement in Orlando East in July 2022, which claimed the lives of 16 people and left seven injured, was one of the cases linked to him. The attackers, armed with AK-47s and pistols, opened fire on patrons, leaving a scene of devastation with over 130 spent AK-47 cartridges.
According to National Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the suspect was shot after resisting arrest and drawing a gun on the police. The officers were left with no choice but to use lethal force to protect themselves and the public.
This operation serves as a significant blow to the illicit mining industry and sends a strong message that law enforcement agencies are committed to cracking down on criminal activities associated with it. The successful apprehension of this alleged kingpin will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the safety and security of the affected communities.
