The Pietermaritzburg Magistrates Court is set to sentence Mdumiseni Zuma, the instigator of the July unrest, on Wednesday. Zuma was found guilty of contravening the Riotous Assemblies Act in September.
His involvement in the 2021 riots in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng led to his legal troubles.
During the height of the unrest, Zuma took to social media and posted a video of himself inside a mall, encouraging people to engage in public violence and looting.
He even went as far as suggesting that they should target the mall if it remained open the next day. Unfortunately, his words had a profound impact, as the mall was indeed looted and set ablaze just hours later.
Throughout the trial, Zuma admitted to the court that his actions might have influenced others to partake in the looting. His acknowledgement of the consequences of his incitement is a significant factor in the sentencing process.
Now, as the court prepares to hand down its sentence, the focus is on ensuring that justice is served.
The outcome of this case will not only hold Mdumiseni Zuma accountable for his actions but will also send a message that instigating violence and encouraging criminal behaviour will not be tolerated.
