The Ntuzuma Regional Court in KwaZulu-Natal has sentenced a 31-year-old man to life imprisonment for repeatedly raping his mentally disabled biological mother. The court heard that the man showed no remorse for his actions.

According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, the man, who lived with his mother in the KwaMashu area, committed the first rape in 2020. He continued to rape her frequently, almost daily.

Despite the complainant’s attempts to alert those around her, her complaints went unheeded.

When her sister visited from out of the province, the victim begged to leave with her due to the ongoing assaults. The sister subsequently reported the matter to the police, leading to the man’s arrest after the victim identified him.

During the court proceedings, state prosecutor Lisa Abrahams presented testimonies from the man’s mother and her sister, along with evidence from a J88 form and a psychologist’s report.

The victim’s impact statement, facilitated by court preparation officer Senziwe Mthethwa, revealed that the victim felt haunted by the incidents and had to relocate due to her son’s actions. She noted that her son had shown no regret for his heinous crimes.

The man was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape. Additionally, the court ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

The NPA welcomed the successful prosecution, emphasizing its commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of society. “We commend the work done by the prosecution and the police in securing the conviction,” the NPA stated.
