The High Court in Johannesburg has issued a substantial sentence against Simon Mahuse, 28, and his co-accused, Frans Ntshumayelo, 30, as they face a combined 73 years behind bars.
This verdict follows their conviction for the murders of EFF councillor Koketso Mojatau and Siboniso Sokhele, along with several additional charges including attempted murder and armed robbery.
A Pattern of Violence
From January to April 2023, Mahuse and Ntshumayelo carried out a series of violent crimes that gravitated towards armed robberies.
Court evidence revealed a disturbing pattern of their operations, where they targeted unsuspecting victims at gunpoint to steal vehicles, cellphones, and other personal belongings.
One of the most notable incidents illustrated the harsh reality of their criminal activities, as a brave complainant attempted to defend themselves and tragically became a victim of the accused’s gunfire.

The Role of Community in Law Enforcement
Thanks to a community tip-off, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) managed to trace the suspects to a specific address in Phumula. Upon their arrival, police found numerous suspicious items indicative of their involvement in a string of robberies.
A tense shootout ensued, resulting in the death of one suspect, while Mahuse and Ntshumayelo were ultimately apprehended. This arrest showcases the critical role that community vigilance plays in criminal justice.
While Mahuse and Ntshumayelo were sentenced to 73 years, their effective imprisonment term was reduced to 24 years due to concurrent sentencing. The repercussions of their actions will resonate within the community they targeted, and the legal system has displayed its commitment to punitive action against such violent crimes.
