A KwaZulu-Natal police officer is under investigation after a viral TikTok video captured him driving a marked SAPS vehicle without a driver’s door on a busy freeway. The clip, posted by a fellow motorist, shows a Durban Central police car cruising down the highway—missing a major safety feature. It has already racked up over 270,000 views on the platform.

The incident has caused public backlash and caught the attention of KZN Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who ordered an immediate internal probe.

Damaged in Crash—But Still Driven By Officer

According to SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the vehicle had been involved in an accident in Durban North. The driver’s door was removed to rescue a trapped female officer, but despite the extensive damage, another officer decided to drive it back to the station—a move that clearly violates standard police protocols.

Netshiunda explained: “Endangering his life and putting the name and the image of the South African Police Service into disrepute. Although the vehicle was being escorted by another blue-light vehicle which the video does not show, the fact remains that the vehicle was not supposed to be driven in such an unroadworthy condition.”

Top Brass: “We Won’t Tolerate Disregard for Procedure”

Commissioner Mkhwanazi made it clear that negligence and poor decision-making won’t be tolerated within the ranks. He confirmed that not only the officer behind the wheel, but also anyone who authorised or allowed the doorless car to be driven, would face internal disciplinary action.

“The member who was driving the vehicle, the officer who gave such an unlawful instruction for the vehicle to be driven and anyone else who was involved in the decision to have that vehicle driven in that condition will be subjected to internal disciplinary processes.”

Mkhwanazi also emphasised the importance of preserving public trust: “We shall never allow anyone to undo the positive impact that police have been making to create a safe and secure environment for all the people in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.”
