Joshlin Smith Disappearance: Court Hears Devastating Impact On Family And Community

The emotional toll of Joshlin Smith’s disappearance took centre stage on Wednesday as the second day of sentencing proceedings unfolded in the Western Cape High Court. Victim impact reports are expected to shed light on the deep and lasting pain endured by both her family and the broader Saldanha community.

Earlier this month, Jacquen ‘Boeta’ Appollis, Steveno van Rhyn, and Kelly Smith were convicted of human trafficking and kidnapping in connection with Joshlin’s disappearance. The young girl was last seen after 5pm on February 19, 2024, near her home in Middelpos.

Despite months of searching, Joshlin remains missing. Residents of Saldanha, devastated and determined, continue their efforts to find her.

Expert: Joshlin’s Sale Was Premeditated

In a damning virtual testimony on Tuesday, US-based human trafficking expert Dr Marcel van der Watt presented a chilling report that outlined the calculated nature of the crime.

“Kelly had devised a plan to sell Joshlin as early as August 2023,” said van der Watt. “This indicates significant forethought and intent, as the accused had ample time to consider and deliberate over the nature of her actions and the consequences for Joshlin.”

Van der Watt further explained that the act was not spontaneous, but a “calculated crime,” pointing to established trafficking patterns.

“The evidence also strongly suggests that no other alternative but that Joshlin was sold for exploitation. This aligns with the established patterns of trafficking crimes, where victims are treated as commodities with financial earning potential. The accused knowingly commodified Joshlin, prioritising their financial motives over her well-being and safety,” he testified.

Probation Officer Urges Harsh Sentencing

Later in the proceedings, probation officer Errol Daniel Pietersen submitted a pre-sentencing report, detailing the personal histories of the convicted and the broader implications of their crimes.

Pietersen’s report strongly advocated for maximum sentencing, describing the actions of the accused as having left a trail of emotional devastation in their wake.

As the court prepares to hear the victim impact statements, many await the emotional testimonies expected to reveal the profound grief and trauma caused by Joshlin’s disappearance — a case that continues to haunt a community still holding out hope.
