Jeppestown Fire Destroys 12 Basement Shacks Days After Mayfair Tragedy

Johannesburg was rocked by yet another fire on Wednesday morning, this time in Jeppestown, where a blaze broke out in the basement of a two-storey building filled with makeshift shacks. The fire destroyed 12 informal structures, raising renewed concerns about fire safety in vulnerable urban communities.

Firefighters from Johannesburg Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded swiftly to the scene at the corner of Janie and Jules streets, arriving at 9:50 am to find the building already engulfed in flames.

“The fire started in the basement of the building where shacks were erected,” said EMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo. “Firefighters managed to evacuate all occupants of the building to safety.”

No Casualties, But Fire Risk Remains High

Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported in Wednesday’s incident, a rare relief considering the tragic house fire earlier this week in Mayfair, which claimed the lives of four toddlers.

EMS confirmed the Jeppestown fire has been completely extinguished, but the damage underscores ongoing safety challenges faced by residents living in overcrowded and informal conditions, especially during the winter months.

Khumalo urged residents to take extra care during the ongoing cold front: “EMS implores the residents of Johannesburg to be extra cautious when using electrical appliances during the cold front.”

Deadly Mayfair Fire Still Fresh in Residents’ Minds

The Jeppestown fire comes just two days after a fatal house fire in Mayfair on Monday left four children—each under the age of two—dead. EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi confirmed that the children were found during search and rescue operations.

“While conducting a search and rescue operation, four bodies of young kids ranging from two years and below were recovered. Unfortunately, they were confirmed dead on the scene by Gauteng EMS paramedics,” said Mulaudzi.

Initial investigations suggest a heating device caused the blaze. “It appears they might have suffered smoke inhalation during this fire incident,” Mulaudzi added.

City fire officials are conducting a preliminary investigation into the Jeppestown incident, and EMS continues to urge the public to prioritise safety as temperatures drop and the use of heating devices increases.
