Dog Plays Critical Role In Rescuing Missing Pretoria Man From Stormwater Drain

A dog played a vital role in the rescue of a missing 22-year-old Pretoria man who was found stuck in a stormwater drain on Tuesday afternoon.

Julian Otto, 22, from East Lynn went missing on Monday after he requested an e-hailing service to travel to Wonderboom but cancelled the ride.

He was found on Wednesday afternoon in Montana Park, stuck inside a drain covered by a concrete slab. The Sinoville Firefighting Organisation, a nonprofit, led the rescue operation.

Johan Botha, leader of the Sinoville Firefighting Organisation, recounted that a resident was walking with a dog on the corner of Besembiesie and Goshawk streets in Montana Park when the dog began sniffing and barking at the drain in which Otto was lying.

The organisation received a call about a person in the drain, which was difficult to navigate due to the heavy concrete slab. Thankfully, public donations enabled them to obtain the necessary equipment to lift the slab safely.

The rescue took about an hour; the team mobilized at 3.15 pm, and Otto was freed by 3.50 pm. After lifting the concrete, they calmed Otto and provided immediate medical care, including administering a drip.

Otto was taken to the hospital in a stable condition, though dehydrated. Johan Botha called the rescue ‘extraordinary,’ noting the unusual nature of how Otto became trapped in such a confined space. He emphasized the importance of community support and donations in enabling their life-saving work.

Otto’s mother, Estelle, expressed relief and gratitude for the rescue. ‘He was full of dust but now he is clean. He is doing fine, they are observing him and making sure he is ok,’ she said. Botha underscored that their work is driven by a commitment to saving lives, not for financial gain.

The successful rescue operation highlights the critical role of community donations in supporting local organizations, enabling them to respond effectively to emergencies.
