Cape Flats Father Allegedly Shot Dead By Own Son In Gang-Related Violence

Residents of Vyigieskraal in Athlone, Cape Flats, woke up to tragedy on Thursday morning when a well-known local man, affectionately called “Uncle Makondo,” was shot dead—allegedly by his own son. The shooting happened around 7am while the 51-year-old was reportedly throwing out water in his yard.

According to community sources, the son, believed to be involved in gang-related activities, may have mistaken his father for a rival gang member. “I think it was his own son who shot him en die mense is baie bang om te praat (afraid to talk),” said one fearful neighbour. “The son thought he was an enemy because he is a gangster. Die ding ruk in die informal settlements.”

Police confirmed the incident and said the motive appears to be gang-related. “Police members were called to the crime scene where they found the victim with gunshot wounds to his body.

The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel,” said Sergeant Wesley Twigg. “The suspect/s are yet to be arrested. Athlone detectives are investigating a murder case.”

Gang Violence Spilling Into Residential Areas

Locals say gang-related shootings have been increasing in Vyigieskraal, with residents constantly fearing for their lives. “The skote have become out of hand recently,” said one concerned resident. “It’s affecting mense (people) while they’re on their way to or from school, church or work.”

They say that while they are trying their best to push back against gang activity, the violence has begun spilling over from the nearby informal settlement into their community. The alleged shooter in this case reportedly lives in the nearby area and has previously faced murder charges.

“The violence is not just staying in the camps anymore. It’s reaching our front doors,” said another resident.

Second Fatal Shooting In Cape Flats

In a separate incident just 30 minutes earlier, a 38-year-old man was shot in the face on Pearl Street, not far from the first crime scene. Residents say he was a known chronic patient who had just stepped outside to relieve himself when he was killed.

“[Hy] het grootgeword in die plek… hy was nie ’n target nie (he grew up in the place, he wasn’t the target),” said a neighbour, insisting the victim had no known links to gang activity.

Sergeant Twigg confirmed: “Police members attended to the crime scene where they found the victim with a gunshot wound to his face. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the attack is believed to be gang-related.”

He added that the suspects in both incidents fled the scenes and are still at large.
