Nigerian Televangelist Timothy Omotoso Arrested Again For Immigration Violations

Controversial Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso was arrested in East London on Saturday morning for immigration-related violations.

The Department of Home Affairs confirmed the arrest, stating that Omotoso, leader of the Jesus Dominion International Church, was now considered to be in South Africa illegally following a ministerial decision to uphold his status as a prohibited person.

According to a statement, the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster-led operation led to his rearrest after Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber rejected Omotoso’s appeal against a previous decision that barred him from remaining in the country.

“The minister’s decision means that Omotoso is now illegally in the Republic of South Africa and, therefore, subject to deportation,” the department stated. He is expected to appear in court on Monday to face charges under the Immigration Act.

Omotoso Acquitted in Rape and Human Trafficking Case

Omotoso and his co-accused, Lusanda Sulani and Zukiswa Sitho, were acquitted on 2 April in the Eastern Cape High Court in Gqeberha of 32 serious charges, including rape, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Judge Irma Schoeman delivered a scathing judgement, criticising the State’s case and finding it failed to prove the allegations beyond reasonable doubt.

Despite this legal victory, Omotoso’s troubles persisted with immigration authorities. His attempt to overturn his prohibited person status was reviewed by the courts, which directed the matter back to Home Affairs for reconsideration. After reassessment, the minister upheld the original decision.

Home Affairs: “Rule of Law Without Fear or Favour”

Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza emphasised that Omotoso’s arrest stemmed from his continued violation of South Africa’s immigration laws. “Omotoso earlier challenged his status as a prohibited person in court, and the court held that his status should be remitted back to the department for reconsideration,” Qoza said. “After carefully reconsidering the matter, the minister upheld the decision to declare Omotoso as a prohibited person.”

The department underscored its dedication to enforcing legal compliance across all sectors. “The Department of Home Affairs continues to be guided by our unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law without fear or favour,” the statement read.

Omotoso’s court appearance on Monday will determine the next steps regarding his deportation.
