At the recent Bafana Bafana match against Congo, our so-called superfan, Joy “Mama Joy” Chauke, found herself in hot water for what many are calling outright bullying.
The self-proclaimed superfan acted in a very disturbing manner and let’s just say, her fame-hungry gestures didn’t sit well with the online crowd.
When Fame Goes Wrong
Okay, let’s start right from the beginning, shall we? So kids who were at the back of Mama Joy noticed that the camera had turned on them. Being kids and fans one of them quickly pulled out a poster he had for his Super Hero Ronwen Willams.
But Mama Joy’s flamboyant outfit was blocking him so he had to lean forward, placing it in front of her. And did this woman not just smack the poster right out of his hands like it’s a pesky mosquito? Hayibo lomama, and you could tell that she didn’t even care not even a sorry or just look at the boy to show some remorse nyana.
All she wanted was to make sure that the camera was capturing her and only HER! And now we all have to forget about the wonderful 5-0 win we’re supposed to be celebrating!
Is Mama Joy a Bully?
The comments rolled in faster than Bafana could score their goals. With observers questioning whether Mama Joy’s actual persona is just a façade for narcissism, it feels like we need to have a chat about what it means to be a fan.

It’s one thing to cheer for your team; it’s another to bully a kid who’s just as excited about their hero. At sporting events, we all bought tickets – so why should Mama Joy get to monopolize the spotlight and act like the whole stadium belongs to her? Can we just agree that while she might rock the flamboyant outfits, her actions just ain’t it?
In the Spotlight vs. For the Fans
It’s plain to see that being a superfan should come with a sense of responsibility towards fellow supporters, especially kids. Mama Joy’s flashy outfits and over-the-top antics might earn her screen time, but at what cost?
Many believe her actions weren’t just about shielding her face; they were a clear attempt to centre the attention on herself, turning a celebration into a media circus. Let’s hope Mama Joy weighs her passion for the limelight against the joy of uplifting young fans next time around.
