Just three weeks before the Paris Olympics, Luxolo Adams has found himself in the midst of controversy after being dropped from Team South Africa in favour of Wayde van Niekerk.

Adams has expressed his dissatisfaction publicly, indicating that the decision by Athletics South Africa (ASA) has had a profound impact on his mental health.

In a heartfelt statement posted on his Instagram account, Adams revealed he is seeking urgent legal intervention to prevent ASA from excluding him from the team he qualified for.

He emphasized the need for transparency and consistency in ASA’s selection criteria. Adams pointed out that he wouldn’t be the first South African athlete to take such measures; Alex Peternell did the same to secure his spot in the 2012 London Olympics.

ASA has yet to provide an official explanation for their decision. However, it appears that the move was made to bolster the medal prospects of the 4x400m and 4x100m relay teams by having van Niekerk switch from the 400m to the 200m, thereby taking Adams’ spot.

Adams shared that the decision has been incredibly disheartening, especially given the strenuous journey and challenges he has faced.

He qualified for the Olympics in August last year and underwent rehabilitation for a hamstring issue earlier this year. Despite being cleared by his doctor, ASA cited a ‘perceived lack of readiness’ as the reason for his removal.

Adams competed for the first time this year, clocking 21.50 seconds, only to be informed via WhatsApp that he was withdrawn from the team.

Adams aims to set a precedent for all athletes, advocating for fairness, transparency, and the mental well-being of athletes.

He stresses that athletes’ dreams should not be shattered by politics and power plays. His fight continues, and many are watching closely to see how this situation unfolds, hoping for a resolution that upholds the values of integrity and fairness in sports.
