Kaizer Chiefs fans have reason to rejoice as their star goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, has returned to the team following his suspension. The club confirmed on Wednesday that Khune is back just in time for the highly anticipated Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
Khune’s suspension came after he reportedly arrived at training intoxicated. During his time away from the team, he was allowed to play for the Carling All-Stars XI in the Carling Cup against Stellenbosch FC in January. However, Khune had to fulfil certain conditions required of him before being allowed back at the Village.
According to a statement on the Chiefs website, Khune fully participated in a corrective programme designed to meet the set expectations for a professional athlete. An independent body of professionals reviewed his progress and confirmed that he had completed all the necessary requirements.
During his three-month absence, Khune also gained valuable experience by participating as a panellist for SABC Sport analysts during the recent Africa Cup of Nations. This experience is expected to benefit him both as a professional athlete and as an individual.
The return of Khune is a significant boost for Kaizer Chiefs, with teammate Bruce Bvuma recently admitting that the veteran goalkeeper was missed in the club’s dressing room. Khune’s presence and expertise will undoubtedly strengthen the team’s chances in the upcoming Soweto derby.
