Six More Home Affairs Officials Fired As Anti-Corruption Crackdown Gains Momentum

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has dismissed six more officials as part of its intensifying campaign to root out fraud and corruption. This brings the total number of dismissals to 33 officials since July 2024, with several others facing criminal charges or disciplinary action.

Criminal Charges and Jail Time for Corrupt Officials

In addition to the dismissals, eight officials have already been convicted and sentenced to prison, with sentences ranging from four to 18 years. A further 19 officials are currently being prosecuted for crimes including fraud, bribery, and the unlawful issuing of documents.

One high-profile case involved Pakistani national Afran Ahmed, who was sentenced to 18 years in prison by the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court. Ahmed reportedly charged foreign nationals R45,000 per fraudulent South African passport, facilitated with the help of complicit Home Affairs officials.

Home Affairs: No Room for Corruption

Tuesday’s disciplinary actions follow the recent launch of the Border Management and Immigration Anti-Corruption Forum — a joint effort between DHA, the Border Management Authority (BMA), the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

“The speed at which Home Affairs, in collaboration with the SIU, is clearing out corruption from our midst demonstrates that swift progress can be made in the fight against this scourge,” said Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber.

Schreiber: ‘Delays Will Not Be Tolerated’

Minister Schreiber has taken a firm stance against corruption, stating that no delays or excuses will be accepted in the fight to clean up the department.

“I applaud the inter-departmental teams for their progress in ensuring that we wash the stain of corruption and state capture off of Home Affairs so that it becomes the proud institution our country deserves,” Schreiber said.

He also issued a stern warning to remaining corrupt officials within the system:

“My message to remaining perpetrators is clear: it is only a matter of time before we catch you and hold you accountable.”

Alongside the six dismissals, six additional Home Affairs officials received final written warnings for lesser offences, signalling that the department is not only focused on criminal prosecution but also administrative accountability.
