EFF leader Julius Malema has cast his vote at Mponegele Primary School in Seshego, Limpopo, as South Africans head to the polls for the 2026 Local Government Elections.

Malema voted in his hometown, the township near Polokwane where he was born and raised. He was accompanied by fellow party leaders and his son when he arrived at the voting station.

The EFF leader hails from Ward 13, where the party secured the majority of votes in the 2021 local government elections. The EFF currently has the ward councillor, according to available election records.

Malema Raises Water Concerns In Polokwane

While the EFF has a strong presence in Malema’s home ward, it does not govern the entire Polokwane Municipality.

The municipality has been governed by the ANC, which secured a majority in the 2021 local government elections.

EFF Hopes To Make Gains In Polokwane

The EFF is hoping to improve its electoral performance in Polokwane and challenge the ANC’s dominance in the municipality.

In the 2021 local government elections, the ANC received 58.3% of the ward vote in Polokwane, while the EFF secured 22%. The ANC also won 56 of the municipality’s 90 council seats, giving it a majority.

In Ward 13, however, the EFF received 50.7% of the ward vote, ahead of the ANC’s 47%.

Malema believes the political landscape may have shifted and has suggested that the ANC could fall below the 50% mark in the municipality.

The outcome of the 2026 elections will determine whether the EFF can translate its support in areas such as Seshego into greater influence over the governance of Polokwane.
