President Ramaphosa To Respond To Opening Of Parliament Address Debate

President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to respond to the debate in his opening address to Parliament later this morning. The discussion, which took place in Cape Town City Hall, follows Ramaphosa’s speech delivered on Thursday evening.

During the marathon sitting on Friday, various political parties had the opportunity to discuss and critique the President’s address.

In his speech, President Ramaphosa highlighted several key objectives for his administration, the first as the head of the Government of National Unity (GNU).

He emphasized the focus on inclusive growth and job creation, aiming to reduce poverty and the high cost of living. Additionally, Ramaphosa committed to building a capable, ethical, and developmental state.

The debate saw a mix of reactions from the members of Parliament. While those in the GNU supported Ramaphosa’s vision, they did not shy away from expressing their concerns.

On the other hand, the opposition benches were critical, arguing that the President’s speech lacked new initiatives.

Dr John Hlophe, the parliamentary leader of the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party, reiterated one of their election promises, calling for an amendment to the section in the constitution dealing with land expropriation.
