SACP Reiterates Warning To MK Party Members Regarding Chris Hani’s Grave

She further emphasised that the party is not allowed to use any symbols associated with Chris Hani, including pictures, names, apparel, or insignia

The South African Communist Party (SACP) has restated the firm stance taken by Limpho Hani, the widow of anti-apartheid activist Chris Hani, cautioning all members of the recently registered Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) party to refrain from visiting Chris Hani’s grave.

Reports in the weekend newspapers had suggested that former President Jacob Zuma and the MK party planned to pay a visit to the burial site of the revered struggle icon.

This news came on the heels of Cleopatra Tunyiswa, a 57-year-old woman who claims to be Chris Hani’s eldest daughter, leaving the ruling African National Congress (ANC) to join the Zuma-backed MK party.

In response to these developments, Limpho Hani issued a strongly worded statement, asserting that the MK party, represented by Zuma and its members, are prohibited from approaching Chris Hani’s gravesite.

She further emphasised that the party is not allowed to use any symbols associated with Chris Hani, including pictures, names, apparel, or insignia. Dr. Alex Mashilo, the national spokesperson of the SACP, echoed Limpho’s sentiments in a television interview, stating that members of the MK party should not be seen anywhere near Chris Hani’s grave.

Dr. Mashilo emphasised that the prohibition applies to all individuals affiliated with the MK party, regardless of their past or current status. The SACP’s position is clear: the newly-formed MK party must respect the wishes of the Hani family and refrain from any activities near Chris Hani’s final resting place.

The SACP’s reiteration of this warning underscores the significance of honouring the legacy and memory of Chris Hani, a revered figure in South Africa’s struggle against apartheid. It serves as a reminder that respect for the wishes of the family and the principles Hani stood for should be paramount in all actions and affiliations relating to his name and legacy.
