New details have emerged regarding the appointment of Jomo Sibiya, former KwaZulu-Natal MEC of Public Works and Human Settlements, as an adviser to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Jomo Sibiya’s appointment comes as a replacement for Bejani Chauke, who is now serving as Ramaphosa’s special envoy after resigning as an adviser following his election to the ANC National Executive Committee.

Sibiya had previously lost his MEC position last year when the slate he supported, which included former premier Sihle Zikalala, was defeated at the ANC provincial elective conference.

Media reports indicated that Jomo Sibiya expressed his commitment to being supportive, objective, and loyal to the president while maintaining independent thinking.

He recently resigned as a member of the provincial legislature, expressing excitement about the new role and embracing the responsibility that accompanies it. Jomo Sibiya eagerly anticipates making a meaningful contribution and collaborating with the president.

There were expectations within the ANC that Jomo Sibiya might secure a senior Cabinet post. However, due to the unavailability of such positions, his appointment as a special adviser to the president was seen as a fitting alternative.
