Mbalula On ANC’s Legal Challenge Against MK Party And Zuma “This Is Just The Beginning”

Mbalula also stated that regardless of the court's decision, it would not be the end of the day for the ANC, as they respect the rule of law.

The African National Congress (ANC) has initiated legal action against the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party, which is named after its disbanded military wing.

The ANC’s challenge aims to have the MK party deregistered, and former president Jacob Zuma is being dragged into further legal action as a result.

Speaking after the court hearing in Bloemfontein, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula described the proceedings as “the beginning” of the party’s fight against its former president.

Mbalula emphasized that the ANC would not allow Zuma to run away with the MK party, as it belongs to the ANC and the people of South Africa. He stated that the ANC is challenging Zuma on two levels: the deregistration of the MK party and the ownership of Umkhonto Wesizwe.

Mbalula expressed shock at Zuma’s decision to form a political party against the ANC. He reiterated that the MK party is the property of the ANC and emphasized the party’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.

Mbalula also stated that regardless of the court’s decision, it would not be the end of the day for the ANC, as they respect the rule of law.

The ANC’s legal challenge has become a contentious issue for the MK party, particularly as it comes just a few months before the 2024 national elections. Bonginkosi Khanyile, the interim youth leader of the MK party, recently stated that they would do everything in their power to stop the elections if the MK party or Zuma’s face is not featured on the ballot papers.

Khanyile, who is facing charges of incitement of violence for the July 2021 unrest, expressed the party’s willingness to confront security forces in their fight for democracy.

Visvin Reddy, another senior leader of the MK party in KwaZulu-Natal, echoed Khanyile’s sentiments in a viral video, warning of anarchy and riots if the courts try to stop the MK party. He emphasized that there will be no elections in South Africa if the MK party is not included on the ballot.

While the outcome of the ANC’s legal challenge remains uncertain, it is evident that the party is determined to protect its assets and ensure its continued influence. The dispute between the ANC and Zuma highlights the complex dynamics within South African politics and the ongoing struggle for power.
