The City of Johannesburg’s Mayor, Kabelo Gwamanda, has recently come under scrutiny for his alleged large contingent of bodyguards.

However, Gwamanda has defended himself, stating that he only has eight bodyguards and not the reported ten. The criticism arose from media reports highlighting his alleged security detail and a fleet of luxury vehicles accompanying him to various events.

Gwamanda took the opportunity during his response to the State of the City Address (SOCA) to address the allegations and clarify any misconceptions. He emphasized that he does not have ten bodyguards, but rather the eight bodyguards were assigned to him by Councillor Mpho Phalatse. Additionally, the car he uses for transportation is a vehicle given to him by Phalatse.

Furthermore, Gwamanda stated that he often prefers using his own private car instead of the mayoral vehicle provided by the city. He emphasised that he values personal freedom and travels with bodyguards less frequently, showcasing the kind of leader he aspires to be. Gwamanda expressed gratitude for the city of Johannesburg’s support in his absence of protectors.

Gwamanda accused the Democratic Alliance (DA) of passing down the large number of bodyguards assigned to the mayor and the speaker of the council. However, the DA has denied these allegations, stating that they are not responsible for the increased number of bodyguards.

Gwamanda clarified that his administration has simply continued with the VIP policy left behind by the DA when they were in power in Johannesburg. He emphasized that his administration’s aim is to present the existing structure to the council for record purposes and to conduct an assessment on how to move forward with their inheritance.
