Former statesman Jacob Zuma has made serious accusations against the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).
Speaking outside the Johannesburg High Court on Monday, Zuma accused the IEC of provoking the MK party by declaring the results of the recent general election.
This statement came as Zuma was addressing party supporters during a court appearance regarding his legal matter against the former leader of his party, Jabulani Khumalo. The judgment in this matter has been reserved.
Before the results announcement, Zuma had warned the IEC not to declare the results, citing the MK party’s demand for a re-run of the polls.
This tension escalated further when Khumalo, who has taken the MK party to court, faced hostility from party supporters. They charged towards him and threw objects at his car just before Zuma stepped out of the court.
In his address to the crowd, Zuma stated that the IEC’s announcement of the results was a provocation, especially given that the MK party planned to dispute the results.
Some supporters even asked Zuma to command them to take drastic actions, including using machine guns. However, Zuma urged them to refrain from such actions, advising, “Don’t be in a rush. I heard that some of you were so angry you wanted to take action and burn things, no don’t rush.”
Despite the party spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndlela, informing supporters that Khumalo’s court bid had failed, the court is yet to deliver its judgement. The situation remains tense as the MK party awaits the final decision.
