The commission confirmed that it has received over 500 objections from more than 20 political parties. Among the dissenting voices are former President Jacob Zuma’s Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party and former Free State Premier Ace Magashule’s African Congress for Transformation (ACT). Zuma warned the IEC against declaring the results amid these objections, citing potential issues with the machines used during voting.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, speaking as the leader of a political party, humorously remarked on the announcement, “How I wish the mistake you made these are the 2019 election results were true!” His comments were met with laughter, showing a mix of relief and concern over the election’s controversial aspects. The presidency has confirmed that President Ramaphosa will deliver an address at the results ceremony.

As South Africa moves forward with its new parliamentary composition, the IEC’s declaration of the 2024 election results will undoubtedly shape the nation’s political and social discourse. With significant objections and a historic decline in ANC support, the future of South African politics appears poised for transformative change.
