The incident occurred when one bus in the convoy crashed into another, causing it to overturn and fall down an embankment. The ANC’s 112th birthday rally, which was supposed to take place at Mbombela Stadium, was overshadowed by this tragic event.
At the funeral service held in Botlokwa village, the ANC’s Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula and Treasurer-General Gwen Ramokgopa were in attendance to pay their respects. Stan Mathabatha, the ANC provincial spokesperson, also joined the mourners.
During the service, Mathabatha took the opportunity to address and dismiss rumours that he had left the ANC to join uMkhonto weSizwe, a group currently supported and campaigned for by former President Jacob Zuma.
Mathabatha vehemently denied these claims, stating his unwavering loyalty to the ANC. He emphasized that the ANC had played a significant role in shaping his life and that he would remain a member of the party until the end. He strongly refuted the tabloids’ allegations, urging them to retract their false reports.
The funeral service served as a sombre reminder of the sacrifices made by ANC members in their dedication to the party’s cause. It also highlighted the unity and resilience of the ANC community during times of tragedy.
