Former President Jacob Zuma Faces Suspension From ANC Membership

The NEC, the highest decision-making body of the ANC, convened a late-night meeting on Sunday where it was agreed that Zuma's membership should be suspended with immediate effect.

Today marks a significant day for former South African president, Jacob Zuma, as the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) concludes its two-day meeting.

Speculation is rife that Zuma’s tenure as an ANC member may come to an end, with the NEC expected to rubber-stamp his suspension.

The NEC, the highest decision-making body of the ANC, convened a late-night meeting on Sunday where it was agreed that Zuma’s membership should be suspended with immediate effect.

The party’s secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, is tasked with notifying Zuma of his suspension. Although there were initial plans for Zuma’s branch in Nkandla to suspend his membership, it was later revealed that the branch was not in good standing.

While the NEC opted not to expel Zuma as an ANC member, citing the need for longer disciplinary processes, it is widely believed that Zuma will not attend such proceedings.

According to the ANC constitution’s rule 25, Zuma’s actions of not campaigning or voting for the ANC are seen as a breach of the party’s constitution.

Zuma’s recent announcement that he would support the Umkhonto weSizwe party (MK) in the 2024 general elections, citing the ANC’s departure from its core values, has further strained his relationship with the party.

This statement contradicts his earlier endorsement of the ANC as the “only viable instrument to bring about a better life” in South Africa.

ANC KwaZulu-Natal secretary, Bheki Mtolo, recently stated that Zuma is “no longer a member of the ANC.” Mtolo attributed this departure to Zuma’s growing animosity towards current ANC president, Cyril Ramaphosa, and his realization that the party is no longer solely focused on serving his interests.

As the ANC NEC concludes its meeting today, the fate of Jacob Zuma’s ANC membership hangs in the balance. The decision to suspend his membership reflects the party’s commitment to upholding its constitution and ensuring accountability among its members.
