The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has declared its intention to win the Gauteng province and overthrow the ruling African National Congress (ANC) in the upcoming May general elections.
Party leader Julius Malema addressed a large gathering of supporters at the Dobsonville stadium in Soweto during the provincial manifesto launch.
The event, themed “land and jobs now, stop load shedding”, highlighted the party’s focus on addressing key issues affecting the country. Supporters, adorned in EFF regalia, filled the stadium, chanting slogans such as “EFF forever” and “vote EFF”.
The EFF has set its sights on bringing about significant change, vowing to create jobs and put an end to load shedding.
Nkululeko Dunga, the provincial chairperson, expressed confidence in the party’s ability to lead Gauteng, citing their previous success of obtaining 634,000 votes in the region during the last national elections. Dunga emphasized that the EFF is not settling for anything less than a decisive victory, aiming to secure over 50% of the votes.
The party has bolstered its presence in Gauteng with the inclusion of key figures such as convener of elections Mbuyiseni Ndlozi and co-ordinator Leigh-Ann Mathys. Their efforts, along with the party’s focus on issues like re-industrialization and land expropriation without compensation, have gained traction among the electorate.
While the ANC remains confident in retaining Gauteng, there is speculation of a potential coalition government after the elections. Dunga stated that the EFF’s priority is achieving a clear majority, which would eliminate the need for coalition partnerships.
EFF supporters, like Soweto resident Thabo Nkosi, are optimistic about the party’s prospects. Nkosi believes that the EFF is here to stay and will bring about positive change in Gauteng.
