DA To Decide On Staying With GNU After ANC Makes Final Offer On Cabinet Positions

President Ramaphosa's strategy has not been without internal challenges. On Wednesday night, he reached out to the DA, attempting to manage some pushback within his own camp over his decision.

After days of intense negotiations and wrangling over key governmental positions, the Democratic Alliance (DA) now faces a critical decision.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended a final offer of six ministries, aiming to secure the DA’s participation in the African National Congress (ANC)’s Government of National Unity (GNU).

This offer follows the DA’s demands for at least 12 cabinet posts and the removal of directors-general in the ministries its members would occupy.

The negotiations between the ANC and the DA have been tumultuous. Initially, the DA sought a more substantial role within the GNU, including the position of Deputy President.

However, after three days of intense discussions, Eyewitness News reports that the ANC has put forth a final offer: six ministerial portfolios and seven deputy positions for the DA.

Additionally, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) will receive three portfolios, while the Patriotic Alliance (PA) and Good Party will be allocated one each. This arrangement means that 10 cabinet positions will be given to the ANC’s political opponents.

It appears that Ramaphosa has now settled on his final offer, which should pave the way for the formation of an executive.

The DA must now decide whether to accept Ramaphosa’s offer and participate in the GNU. This decision comes with significant implications for the party’s future and its role in South African politics.

While the letter that caused a stir on social media demanded a change of directors-general in affected departments, it is understood that this was an error and should not have been included in the negotiations.

As the DA deliberates on its next move, Ramaphosa is expected to brief the ANC’s alliance partners before officially announcing his executive.

The final decision will not only shape the immediate political landscape but also set the tone for future collaborations and governance in South Africa.
