Mbalula Responds To Zuma’s Endorsement Of MK Party “ANC Is Not Threatened”

Mbalula emphasised that the ANC does not have a personal agenda against Zuma and is not threatened by his endorsement of the MK party.

The African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, has addressed the party’s stance regarding former President Jacob Zuma’s endorsement of the newly formed Umkhonto weSizwe party (MK).

Mbalula emphasised that the ANC does not have a personal agenda against Zuma and is not threatened by his endorsement of the MK party.

In recent news, Zuma announced his support for the MK party ahead of the 2024 general elections, citing the ANC’s alleged deviation from its core values.

Many perceive the MK party as a breakaway faction of the ANC, and it has gained attention as a potential major player in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), where the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) holds several strongholds.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a national executive committee meeting in Mpumalanga, Mbalula stated that the NEC is yet to decide Zuma’s fate within the ANC. He clarified that the ANC’s constitution does not recognize the existence of a party called MK, formed by someone who aims to be a saviour or messiah of the party.

Mbalula highlighted the ANC’s history of internal disagreements, citing examples such as the formation of the Congress of the People (COPE) by those dissatisfied with President Zuma and the emergence of the MK party by those who disagreed with President Ramaphosa. He emphasized that the ANC encourages members to resolve their issues within the party itself.

The ANC secretary-general assured that the NEC will thoroughly address the matter at the appropriate time. He expressed scepticism towards some of the statements made by Zuma and referred to them as distortions and far from the truth.

Despite Zuma’s vocal support for the MK Party, it is important to note that he remains a member of the ANC. The ANC’s constitution prohibits any member from campaigning for another political organization. This endorsement by Zuma raises questions about his adherence to the party’s rules and regulations.

Mbalula also acknowledged the impact of Zuma’s presidency on the ANC, particularly about the rise of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). He recognized Zuma’s shortcomings and the negative consequences they had on the party, such as the Nkandla scandal and allegations of state capture.

Analysts have labelled Zuma’s endorsement of the MK party as a blow to the ANC. The ANC Veterans League went further, describing it as “treason and treachery” and calling for strong action to be taken against the former president.

As the ANC navigates this challenging situation, it is crucial for the party to focus on unity and addressing internal concerns. The ANC’s ability to effectively manage internal disagreements and remain true to its core values will play a significant role in maintaining its position as a leading political force in South Africa.
