Phumlani Vokovi Murder: Actor And Wife Gunned Down Over R20 Food Stall?

Actor, artist manager and community activist Phumlani Vokovi and his wife, Nichume, have been shot dead in separate incidents in Khayelitsha, leaving their family, friends and the local entertainment community devastated. Phumlani was reportedly gunned down while closing his roadside food stall, before Nichume was later killed at the couple’s home.

But what makes the tragedy even more unsettling is the allegation now swirling around the killings. Friends claim Phumlani may have been targeted after a dispute over an alleged monthly “protection fee” demanded from his humble food business, where he sold tripe for just R20 a plate.

Neither the police nor the Vokovi family has confirmed that extortion was behind the killings. Police have confirmed that they are investigating two counts of murder, with no arrests made at the time of publication — leaving one chilling question hanging over the case: what really happened to the Vokovis?

Friends say the actor was not running some glamorous business empire — he was simply trying to make an income from a roadside stall selling tripe for R20 a plate.

According to people close to him, the stall was one of the ways Phumlani supported himself alongside his work in entertainment and his passion for developing artists. Now, friends allege that an argument over a monthly protection fee may have preceded his death.

One friend, who spoke anonymously because of fears surrounding alleged extortion gangs, claimed that people in the area were talking about the circumstances but were too frightened to come forward publicly. Another alleged that Phumlani had refused to pay the fee that was reportedly being demanded from his business.

And that's where this case gets particularly disturbing.

If the allegations prove to be connected to the killings, it would mean a man trying to earn a living from a tiny food stall was allegedly caught in a much bigger battle involving criminal extortion. But at this stage, that remains an allegation.

Phumlani's family has reportedly chosen not to speculate about the motive. Relatives have said they would rather wait for the outcome of the investigation before confirming or dismissing claims that extortion was involved.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that investigators are probing two counts of murder. No arrests had been made at the time of publication, and police have not publicly confirmed a motive.

The alleged protection-fee claims have nevertheless struck a nerve because they speak to a much wider fear among small-business owners.

About 40km away, a 34-year-old woman from Steenberg told reporters that protection-fee demands had become so routine in her neighbourhood that residents had developed a system for paying them. She said people living in a yard with several informal structures were once woken at about 3am by people allegedly kicking on doors and demanding money.

The residents eventually decided to collect roughly R1,500 each month and hand it to one person when the alleged collectors arrived. According to her account, the people demanding the money were interested in the fee rather than stealing household possessions.

That account has added another uncomfortable layer to the questions surrounding Phumlani's death.

Phumlani Vokovi Was More Than An Actor

Before the Phumlani Vokovi murder shocked Khayelitsha, he was known as a creative who wanted to see township talent get the attention it deserved. His work stretched beyond acting, with the community activist also involved in artist management and efforts to promote entertainment in the area.

Friends say Phumlani had ambitions for Khayelitsha and wanted to contribute to the development of its arts scene. His food stall was another part of that hustle — a modest business running alongside his creative work.

That combination of entertainment and entrepreneurship paints a very different picture from the glamorous celebrity lifestyle often associated with the industry.

Phumlani was reportedly closing his stall when he was shot. His killers allegedly later went to his home, where Nichume was killed.

The couple's deaths have left their children without both parents, something that has understandably added to the grief surrounding the tragedy.

There has also been a heartbreaking financial reality following Phumlani's death. Friends reportedly revealed that he did not have a funeral policy, prompting people from the entertainment industry to come together to raise funds towards his burial.

For a man who spent his life trying to create opportunities for others, his death has now left his own community scrambling to support his family.

On Sunday, 27 September 2026, ANC Dullah Omar Region chairperson Ndithini Tyhido, Ward 93 councillor Thando Pimpi and a delegation from the Khayelitsha Cluster visited the Vokovi family to offer their condolences.

The ANC described Phumlani as a community activist and artist, saying the tragedy had left Town Two deeply shocked and saddened.

Meanwhile, social media users reacted with a mixture of heartbreak, anger and calls for tougher action against violent crime.
