Zamani Mbatha’s New Role In Land Of Mills And Money Is More Complicated Than It Looks

Zamani Mbatha is stepping into a very different kind of love story as he joins e.tv’s drama series Land of Mills and Money.

The 28-year-old actor plays Muzi Mhlongo, a seemingly good-hearted man who falls for Phiwe, played by Nelisiwe Sibiya, despite the secrets standing between them.

Known for his performances in shows including Isitha: The Enemy, Is’phindiselo and Isithembiso, Zamani said Muzi immediately caught his attention because the character felt refreshing from the moment he read his bio.

For the actor, there was something particularly intriguing about playing a man whose intentions are genuinely good.

“What made me decide to take on this role was that one, just how refreshing it was when I read the bio and when I had to audition, and his intentions as a human being, because he’s one person I think we wish we could have existed,” he said.

Zamani said one of the biggest attractions was the opportunity to explore a character who almost feels too perfect to be real.

“He’s one character I wanted to tap into, the too-good-to-be-true type of vibe. And I think that’s one of the biggest things that drew me to the character,” he explained.

But Muzi is not simply defined by his complicated romance.

According to Zamani, the character also allows him to explore different aspects of township life, particularly the people who step up to support and guide younger generations who are trying to build better lives for themselves.

“Also, just the love story and the dynamic that he has. And also, as a person, in the end, he touches onto the other parts of kasi life, people who take care of the young generation that wishes to do good,” he said.

Muzi’s relationship with Phiwe is set to be one of the major emotional threads in the storyline, especially because of the secrets she is carrying.

Working alongside Nelisiwe Sibiya has also helped Zamani settle into the complicated relationship between their characters.

The actor said their shared understanding of where the story needs to go has made it easier to build an authentic connection on screen.

“I think, more than anything, what’s important is we both understand the end-goal and also working with a super professional like her has made things so much easier and also have the relationship bloom as well,” he said.

However, playing Muzi has not been completely effortless.

Zamani admitted that one of his biggest challenges has been portraying the emotional weight that comes when someone who is fundamentally good finds himself facing painful circumstances.

“The most challenging part was the heaviness of it, because I understand how much of a good person he is. And when things go south, just the heaviness of having to channel and feeling the pain that he feels as a character,” he said.

Despite the emotional demands, Zamani said working with the Land of Mills and Money cast and crew has been one of the highlights of the experience.

The series also features veteran performers including Themba Ndaba, Winnie Ntshaba and Jo-Anne Reyneke.

For Zamani, having everyone working towards the same creative vision has made the experience even more rewarding.

“What I’ve enjoyed the most was that from the office to the crew to my fellow cast, everyone understands the end goal,” he said.

“I think when we all work towards the same goal, it makes it so much easier to achieve that goal.”

And while viewers may already think they have Muzi figured out, Zamani is warning them not to get too comfortable.

“I can’t tell you what I think will surprise viewers. But what I’ll say is that what you see is not what you get,” he teased.

With romance, secrets and unexpected twists ahead, Zamani is encouraging viewers to tune in and see how Muzi’s story unfolds.

“I feel like it’s such a diverse story that touches so many lives,” he said.
