Pedestrian Killed While Crossing N3 Near Tweedie

A tragic start to the Easter weekend unfolded on Friday when a pedestrian was fatally struck while attempting to cross the N3 highway near Tweedie in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Emergency services, including the K9 unit and advanced life support team, responded swiftly to the scene.

“On arrival, it was found that the pedestrian had sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on scene,” said Roland Robertson, operations manager for Midlands Emergency Services. The South African Police Service (SAPS) and other authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Easter Tragedy: Minibus from Mozambique Overturns on N4

In a separate crash, a Toyota Hiace minibus travelling from Mozambique overturned around 5am on Friday near the Klein Olifants Dam on the N4/4 outside Middelburg. The minibus was en route to Carnival City with members of the IPAC church onboard.

Two passengers—a man and a woman—died on impact. Three others sustained serious injuries, while eight had minor injuries. The driver and one passenger escaped unharmed. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the rollover.

Major Collisions Shut Down N3 at Town Hill, Injuring Dozens

Mi7 National Group’s emergency medical services were called to two devastating crashes on the N3 at Town Hill, KwaZulu-Natal, in the early hours of Friday morning. The first involved two heavy-duty trucks, one of which veered off an embankment. A driver was trapped inside the wreckage and was critically injured.

Shortly after that crash, a second, more severe pile-up occurred, reportedly due to residual traffic and debris from the earlier accident. A bus rear-ended a container truck, triggering a chain reaction involving at least 15 vehicles—two trucks, two taxis, and around 10 other cars.

“It was carnage,” said Mi7 EMS, describing the chaotic scene. Triage operations were set up immediately. One bus passenger was trapped and had to be rescued by firefighters. In total, 65 people were injured: one seriously, three moderately, and 61 with minor injuries. Four were taken to hospital, while others received treatment on site.

With high traffic volumes expected over the Easter period, EMS teams are urging motorists to drive with extreme caution and maintain safe following distances to avoid further tragedies.
