Patient Arrested For Assaulting Nurse At Malamulele Hospital

A man who was admitted as a patient at Malamulele Hospital has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a nurse in the early hours of Monday morning.

According to Limpopo Department of Health spokesperson Kapudi Moagi, the incident with the patient occurred in the male ward where the suspect had been admitted following a road accident.

Moagi stated that the patient became aggressive and refused treatment.

“During this time, he assaulted a nurse, claiming his belongings were missing,” he said.

Hospital staff alerted the police immediately, leading to the patient’s swift arrest on charges of physical assault.

Limpopo MEC for Health, Dieketseng Mashego, commended the prompt action taken by the South African Police Service (SAPS).

“We must ensure the safety of our healthcare workers. Violence against them will not be tolerated,” said Mashego in a press statement.

She further emphasized the department’s commitment to maintaining a secure environment for both medical personnel and patients.

Ongoing Concerns Over Violence Against Healthcare Workers

This latest incident comes just weeks after reports emerged of a separate case involving the murder of a nurse by a patient in the Lebowakgomo area.

Fannie Malope Seribishane, a 57-year-old man, is scheduled to stand trial in the Limpopo High Court from August 4 to August 8.

He faces charges including murder, domestic violence, and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, the victim, a 52-year-old nurse, was fatally shot near the entrance of Lebowakgomo Hospital on October 23, 2024. She was on her way to work when the incident occurred.
