One Apprehended After N3 Blocked By Trucks Near Harrismith

On Monday morning, the N3 highway near Harrismith was blocked by trucks, prompting a swift response from the Free State police. According to Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, spokesperson for the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS), authorities intervened quickly to restore order.

During the operation, one individual was detained for questioning, who was reportedly found holding a flag associated with the All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africa.

The All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africa (ATDF-ASA) has publicly distanced itself from the protest. In a recent statement, Secretary-General Gugu Sokhela addressed the situation, affirming that the organization would not engage in the planned shutdown.

The protest seems to have stemmed from a national shutdown poster circulating on social media, which claimed that South African drivers, organized by ATDF-ASA, would participate in a shutdown on November 11, 2024. Sokhela clarified this was not an agreement made within the ranks of ATDF-ASA.

The conflict appears to hinge on the contentious issue of hiring foreign nationals within the trucking industry. As tensions mount over this topic, the ATDF-ASA encouraged others to refrain from using its emblem without proper permission.
