Nine Arrested In R48 Million Drug Lab Bust

In a major breakthrough against organised crime, police in Mpumalanga have arrested nine suspects linked to an alleged illegal drug manufacturing operation in Standerton.

The raid, led by members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), uncovered illegal labs operating across a farm, a warehouse, and a residential house.

Police seized R3.6 million in cash — shockingly found in the boot of a Mercedes-Benz — along with R48 million worth of drug-manufacturing equipment and substances.

Eleven high-end vehicles, including a Range Rover Luma, BMWs, and Mercedes-Benz models, were also confiscated.

The total estimated value of seized assets exceeds R20 million.

Suspects Appear In Court

According to the police ministry, the arrested individuals include six Mozambican nationals and three South African nationals.

All nine arrested suspects have appeared in court.

One South African suspect among the arrested culprits has been granted bail, while the remaining eight are due for a formal bail hearing on April 25.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, and Hawks head Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya visited the crime scenes following the sting operation.

The operation was conducted by DPCI Secunda, Standerton K9, Crime Intelligence units, and private law enforcement groups.

Authorities Call For Stronger Monitoring Of Industrial And Residential Spaces

During a media briefing, Minister Mchunu stressed the scale of the operation, noting how the labs were fully equipped with machinery, including a dismantled tablet pressing machine, generators, and chemical containers.

He noted the importance of increased municipal and law enforcement oversight in industrial and residential areas.

“This whole operation is an indication that we need to increase our law enforcement capacity in order to achieve such results and more,” Mchunu said. “We are prioritising the dismantling of the entire drug trade value chain,” Mchunu said.

He also urged municipalities to be more vigilant in monitoring spaces they rent out and suggested frequent raids at taxi and bus ranks, where illegal activities are known to occur.
