The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is mourning the loss of six soldiers who tragically lost their lives in a devastating wildfire. The fire, which started in Khathu in the Northern Cape, quickly spread to a military base in Lohatla, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

As the fire grew out of control, the provincial disaster management centre unit was unable to contain it, allowing the flames to reach the SA Army Combat Training facility in Lohatla. This unfortunate incident highlights the challenges faced by the sparsely populated Northern Cape province, which is known for its arid conditions and susceptibility to raging wildfires.
