It is a rare occurrence for people to celebrate death. Traditionally, communities mourn the loss of a loved one and come together to support one another during times of grief.
However, the recent events in Praktiseer, a small township outside of Burgersfort, have shed light on a different perspective. The death of Kabelo Phoku, also known as KB, has been met with celebration by some members of the community.

According to locals, Phoku was allegedly the leader of a notorious gang in Tubatse, responsible for a string of crimes including robberies and attempted murders. On the fateful morning of September 22nd, Phoku was caught red-handed, robbing a resident at knife-point. In a desperate act of self-defence, the victim fought back, drawing the attention of passersby.
A mob quickly formed, and in the heat of the moment, Phoku’s life was tragically cut short. His bloodied body lay on the street, a broken bottle by his side, as witnesses captured the scene in shocking photographs that quickly circulated on social media.
As the media arrived on the scene, we witnessed an eerie spectacle. Community members, rather than expressing grief, sang, whistled, chanted, and ululated as Phoku’s lifeless body was loaded into the vehicle by Lebowakgomo pathologists.
An elderly man, who wished to remain anonymous, voiced an understanding of the community’s unconventional response. He acknowledged the fear that Phoku had instilled in the hearts of many, recounting the countless incidents of stabbings and robberies that had plagued Ga Motodi, Praktiseer, Bothashoek, and nearby villages.
While it may be difficult for some to comprehend the celebration of death, it is important to consider the underlying reasons that have led to such a reaction. The community of Praktiseer has long lived under the shadow of Phoku’s criminal activities. For them, his demise symbolizes a ray of hope, a chance for peace and harmony to be restored.
